Studio Urbanistan (Leipzig)
Biography:
Studio Urbanistan is a Leipzig label for performative incidents in urban space and stands for the joint works of Clara Minckwitz and Julia Lehmann. Since 2014, they have been creating new spaces for experiences and encounters between audio tour, site-specific performance and research theater in collaboration with different artists, producers, performers and/or the local population.
Freischwimmen project:
In a ballet for four “mothers” in bulldozers on a waste ground, we question the place of parents in the working world; in a rough setting with big machines. We clear away, we dig deep, we shovel away and pile up again. There’s also a lot that has to come out after the pandemic. The bulldozers do their work stoically, the parents inside are allowed to shout themselves out, let their rage out in earthy force and embody other, unheard voices.
Statement:
FREISCHWIMMEN enabled us to establish connections with venues and artists from the independent scene outside of our region. Joint workshops provided a space for us to gain new insights and inspiration for our own work. For a group like ours, operating in site-specific and public spaces, and consequently not fitting the traditional model for touring productions, networking is hugely important, as this opens up possibilities for finding future sites in which to produce and perform work.
